In October, OpenAI introduced its own search engine that is integrated with ChatGPT. Initially, this feature was accessible only to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, but OpenAI is now extending ChatGPT Search to all users, including those who use the service for free.
ChatGPT Search Accessible to All
As confirmed by OpenAI on Monday, starting today, ChatGPT Search will be available to any logged-in user. Users simply need to access ChatGPT via the web or app and click the search button. Currently, ChatGPT’s knowledge is confined to data acquired up until June 2024, the last update for the GPT-4o model. However, ChatGPT Search is capable of retrieving real-time information from the web.
Once a search is conducted or a question is posed, ChatGPT Search offers a comprehensive answer derived from several sources, which are cited within the response. Search results can also feature images and videos. For users, the experience mirrors that of OpenAI’s chatbot, but now includes real-time data collection and response generation.
OpenAI elaborates on this feature:
ChatGPT now possesses enhanced capabilities for web searches. You can receive swift, relevant answers with links to pertinent online sources, which would have traditionally required a separate search engine. This combines the advantages of a conversational interface with the immediacy of up-to-date scores, news, market quotes, and more.
ChatGPT will determine when to search the web based on your queries, or you can opt to initiate a search by clicking the web search icon manually.
This month, OpenAI also integrated video capabilities into ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, allowing users to engage in natural conversations with the chatbot through video chats, enabling it to respond to questions regarding the video content. Furthermore, since the launch of iOS 18.2 last week, users on iPhone and iPad can interact with ChatGPT directly through Siri.
The ChatGPT app is available for free on the App Store and requires a device running iOS 16.4 or later. Ensure that you have the most recent version installed to access these new features. On the web, ChatGPT Search can be found at chatgpt.com/search.
