Coinbase Introduces 24/7 Bitcoin and Ethereum Futures Trading for US Customers

Coinbase, the leading cryptocurrency exchange, is set to introduce
24/7 futures trading for Bitcoin
and
Ethereum
through its Coinbase Derivatives platform, marking a first for clients in the U.S.

The San Francisco-based company announced on Monday that the service will launch in the coming weeks, though no specific date has been provided.

According to Coinbase, this 24/7 trading capability will allow traders “uninterrupted access to manage risk and seize opportunities—just like crypto.”

“Developed in response to the high demand from crypto-native traders, these advancements aim to make U.S. markets more accessible, competitive, and in line with global standards,” Coinbase stated in their announcement.

Futures trading enables traders to buy or sell the underlying asset—Bitcoin or Ethereum—at a specified price before a certain expiration date. Coinbase has mentioned that the service will provide numerous contract sizes for traders.

Within the derivatives landscape, traders will have access to “micro futures,” reflecting a fraction of the underlying asset.

The global crypto derivatives market significantly outpaces spot trading (which involves the direct buying and selling of digital coins like Bitcoin): Over the last 24 hours, $151 billion has transacted in spot markets, while derivatives markets saw $879 billion traded, according to CoinGecko data.

Coinbase also indicated that it is in the process of introducing perpetual-style futures in the U.S. with long-term expiration options.

Numerous international crypto exchanges already facilitate around-the-clock crypto futures trading services.

In 2022, Coinbase acquired FairX, a CFTC-regulated derivatives exchange, and rebranded it as the Coinbase Derivatives Exchange.
