The AirTag by Apple has established itself as a useful tool for tracking vehicle locations, and now a police department in Colorado has begun distributing them for free to combat auto theft.
According to a recent report shared by CBS Colorado on their YouTube channel, the Arvada, Colorado police are working to reduce auto theft incidents by providing free AirTags and Tile trackers to local residents (via AppleInsider).
The initial giveaway has already occurred, with plans for additional events in the future.
An essential feature of this giveaway is the accompanying sticker that can be placed on vehicles to deter potential thieves.
The sticker indicates that the vehicle is ‘Tracker Equipped’ and that police will be able to track it if stolen.
However, it’s important to note that for the AirTag to aid law enforcement, the owner must share its location with the authorities. There are no conditions associated with the AirTag distribution that grant police special tracking access.
In the event of theft, the AirTag can indeed assist police in locating the stolen vehicle.
It will be intriguing to observe whether this initiative results in a significant reduction in auto theft in Arvada. If successful, similar AirTag giveaways may become more prevalent in other areas.
