Conor McGregor Criticizes Ireland for ‘Illegal Immigration Scheme’ Ahead of Meeting with Trump

Irish mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation Conor McGregor is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House during a visit for Saint Patrick’s Day.

This past Monday, McGregor joined press secretary Karoline Leavitt in the briefing room, where he criticized the Irish government, asserting that it had “abandoned the voices of the people of Ireland.” He condemned what he termed “zero action with zero accountability,” expressing his concerns regarding the “illegal immigration racket.”

“Our government has long since neglected the voices of the people of Ireland. Our funds are being allocated to international issues that have no relevance to the Irish populace. The illegal immigration racket is wreaking havoc across the country. Rural areas in Ireland are being overwhelmed, turning into minorities almost overnight,” McGregor stated.

These comments came just days after a meeting between Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and President Trump at the White House.

In response, Martin shared on X, “St. Patrick’s Day worldwide is a celebration rooted in community, humanity, friendship, and fellowship. Conor McGregor’s remarks are incorrect and do not represent the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, nor the views of the people of Ireland.”

During their meeting, President Trump praised McGregor, expressing admiration for the fighter’s tattoos and acknowledging Ireland’s history of producing legendary fighters. Trump remarked, “I have to say I like your fighter; he’s got the best tattoos I’ve ever seen. Conor’s fantastic, right? Speaking of Conor, there are actually many great Irish fighters. Great fighters.”

McGregor has also faced his own legal challenges, recently being ordered to pay 250,000 euros ($257,000) to a woman who filed a sexual assault lawsuit against him, which he denied.

McGregor’s attendance at President Donald Trump’s second inauguration in January 2025 highlights the intersection of sports and politics. His presence emphasized his support for Trump’s administration and the broader right-wing political landscape.

During the inauguration festivities, McGregor was spotted with notable figures including Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White, podcaster and MMA announcer Joe Rogan, and internet personalities Jake and Logan Paul. Remarkably, McGregor shared a bus ride with the Paul brothers to the event, showcasing a moment of unity despite previous public disputes.

His attendance at the inauguration coincides with his recent political activities, as he has indicated potential ambitions in the political arena, including a potential run for the presidency of Ireland.

McGregor has shown strong support for Trump in the past. After an assassination attempt on Trump in July 2024, McGregor commended the President’s determination, stating, “A 78-year-old multiple billionaire—he should be relaxing on a yacht in the Mediterranean, playing golf. But he’s not. He’s in Pennsylvania, taking fire! Running for the love of his country! Godspeed, Donald! God bless the USA.”
