Customizing the Google Chrome Toolbar on Mac and Windows

This week, Chrome 132 was released as Google’s first significant browser update for 2025, featuring the long-awaited capability to customize the toolbar on desktop.

For users on Chrome for Mac, Windows, and Linux, navigate to the New Tab Page and select “Customize Chrome” located in the bottom-right corner. Under the Appearance color settings, you’ll discover “Toolbar” as a new feature.

This functionality allows you to choose which buttons are displayed to the left and right of the address bar. The available options include:

  • Navigation: Home, Forward, New Incognito Window
  • Your Chrome: Google Password Manager, Payment Methods, Addresses and More, Bookmarks, Reading List, History, Delete Browsing Data
  • Tools and Actions: Print, Search with Google Lens, Translate, Create QR Code, Reading Mode, Copy Link, Send to your devices, Task Manager, and Developer Tools

Google highlights that you can drag and drop icons within the toolbar to rearrange them. Most of these will activate in the side panel interface.

Having “Send to your devices” readily accessible is particularly useful, and I personally find it more convenient to access “Search with Google Lens” from the toolbar rather than the Omnibox. Depending on your screen width, this layout can enhance usability compared to relying on the overflow menu. Remember that the buttons you configure will be synchronized across all your desktop browsers.

This feature has been in development for several months, with Google progressively adding more shortcuts. While it began rolling out to users recently, Google has now confirmed its broader availability on the Chrome 132 What’s new page.

To update Chrome, click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Settings at the bottom. In the left sidebar, navigate to About Chrome.
