TROY, Mich. — An incident occurred Thursday in a suburban Detroit hospital parking garage, where a hospital employee shot a colleague, prompting a swift response at a prominent health care facility. The shooter was apprehended several miles away a few hours later.
The assailant did not enter Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, but the situation was treated as an active shooter alert, leading to a lockdown and heightened security measures at the hospital and nearby schools in Troy.
“We’re fortunate in this instance that it wasn’t an actual active shooter scenario. It was a targeted incident,” said Troy police Chief Josh Jones during a press briefing.
The incident took place around 7 a.m. when one hospital employee confronted another in the parking garage and discharged five rounds. The 25-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and was treated at the hospital, according to Jones.
While the chief did not disclose specifics regarding the motive, he mentioned, “There was some kind of recent conflict.”
Residents received emergency alerts on their phones concerning an active shooter and were advised to steer clear of the vicinity and remain sheltered indoors. Police cruisers with flashing lights blocked significant roadways. Troy is located approximately 22 miles (35 kilometers) north of Detroit.
The suspect was taken into custody about two and a half hours later in a different suburb.
“We are extremely grateful for the prompt actions of our team members and law enforcement,” said Corewell Health.
