SOUTHGATE, Mich. (AP) — A house was obliterated by an explosion early Thursday morning in suburban Detroit, leading to the tragic death of a woman who became trapped in the debris and leaving a man severely injured after being hurled into the front yard.
“Both individuals suffered from serious burns and internal injuries,” stated Southgate police Det. Sgt. Nathan Mosczynski. “The woman also endured significant injuries to her leg.”
The blast jolted the neighborhood awake before 6 a.m., with a couch being flung through a window across the street and debris scattering several blocks away, some becoming entangled in tree branches.
“Initially, I thought it was thunder,” said nearby resident Arturo Ramirez, according to The Detroit News. “Then I noticed a crack appearing in my ceiling.”
A 38-year-old woman was rescued from the debris within the home and subsequently succumbed to her injuries, as reported by the police.
“Currently, it is being considered a gas-related incident, but the exact cause is still under investigation,” Mosczynski added.
