WSJ: iPhone 17 Air Expected to Be Priced Lower Than Anticipated; Foldable iPhone Set for 2026 Release

A recent report from The Wall Street Journal reveals that Apple is developing two new foldable devices slated for 2026 and beyond. The report also shares insights on the anticipated ultra-slim iPhone 17 model.

Details on the iPhone 17 Air

The Wall Street Journal has confirmed several key features of the iPhone 17 Air, referring to it as a “move to reignite growth” following years of minor updates. The specifics are as follows:

Starting next year, Apple aims to release an iPhone that will be slimmer than the current models’ roughly 8-millimeter thickness, according to sources familiar with the plans. This model is designed to be more affordable than the Pro versions, featuring a simplified camera system to cut costs.

Early predictions suggested that the iPhone 17 Air might be Apple’s priciest phone, exceeding even the iPhone 17 Pro Max in cost. However, new insights from The Wall Street Journal indicate that it will actually be less expensive than the Pro models.

Currently, the starting price for the iPhone 16 Pro is $999. Thus, the iPhone 17 Air could launch at a price close to the $900 mark, similar to the iPhone 16 Plus, which it will replace.

As stated by The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone 17 Air will “provide an alternative” for consumers seeking a more streamlined phone without minding some compromises. Apple is heavily betting on the appeal of this ultra-thin design.

Information on New Foldable Devices

Additionally, two new foldable devices are expected—a foldable iPhone and a larger device designed to function as a laptop. The larger device is anticipated to feature a 19-inch display when unfolded, aligning with recent reporting from Bloomberg. Initially, the foldable laptop was expected to launch first; however, it appears the foldable iPhone is currently prioritized.

The report from The Wall Street Journal noted that the foldable iPhone will have a display that “unfolds to a size larger than that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max,” suggesting a display size of at least 7 inches, given that the iPhone 16 Pro Max sports a 6.9-inch display.

Apple has been exploring the idea of external displays for the folding device, but the focus has shifted towards an inward-fold design, similar to competitors’ models in the market. Although these devices have been under development for an extended period, Apple has encountered challenges with the hinge and display covering, causing some delays.

Although Apple executives are advocating for a 2026 launch for the foldable iPhone, the company may require additional time to perfect the device.
