The Apple TV 4K continues to improve every year with consistent software upgrades and periodic hardware enhancements. Its capabilities really stand out when used in conjunction with other Apple gadgets. Here are four standout features of Apple TV 4K that you’ll enjoy by integrating the device with other Apple products.
Voice-activated playback controls with HomePod
One of my favorite examples of how well Apple’s ecosystem works together features the Apple TV 4K and HomePod.
With both devices in the same home, you can control your Apple TV playback just by talking to your HomePod.
Simply ask Siri to play, pause, rewind, or fast forward, and other typical playback functions—there’s no need to even use the Siri button on your remote.
Siri understands you’re referencing the content on your Apple TV and responds appropriately.
Remote app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch
Another handy method to manage your Apple TV 4K is through the Remote app available on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
This app delivers similar functions as the physical Siri Remote, allowing you to control your Apple TV from your other devices.
However, the Remote app extends its capabilities. After using the app on your iPhone, you can monitor playback information directly from your iPhone’s Lock Screen. This is particularly useful on newer devices with always-on displays.
I appreciate being able to quickly check how much time is left in a show or movie without needing to navigate the Apple TV 4K itself.
InSight on iPhone, conveniently accessible
InSight is a recent feature introduced in tvOS 18 that works particularly well on an iPhone.
InSight offers functionality similar to the X-Ray feature on Prime Video, displaying information about the actors featured on screen and the music playing at that moment.
While you can use InSight directly on the Apple TV 4K, I find it much easier and less intrusive on the iPhone. When using it through the iPhone’s Remote app, you can glance at essential information without interrupting your viewing experience on the TV.
HomePod audio experience
Lastly, the Apple TV 4K can not only be controlled through commands to HomePod but can also designate HomePods as your primary speakers, allowing you to enjoy additional features.
To set this up, open the Settings on your Apple TV 4K, navigate to Video and Audio ⇾ Audio Output, and choose your HomePod or a pair of HomePods as your Default Audio Output.
This setup allows you to access Dolby Atmos and introduces a fantastic new feature in tvOS 18.2:
With Enhance Dialogue on HomePod (2nd generation) when paired with Apple TV 4K, you can hear spoken dialogue more clearly over background sounds through real-time audio processing and machine learning.
I enjoy the standard Enhance Dialogue feature from tvOS 18, but with the second-generation HomePod, this feature is even better in tvOS 18.2.
Conclusion on Apple TV 4K features
The success of Apple has always rested heavily on its integrated software and hardware ecosystem, and the Apple TV 4K exemplifies why this connection is so appealing. While it’s a robust standalone product, it shines brightest when combined with other Apple devices.
