With the release of iOS 18.2, a new feature aimed at assisting in locating lost belongings within the Find My app has emerged, potentially reducing the stress that comes when misplacing significant items.
Share Item Location Facilitates Easier Recovery of Lost Items
The Find My app from Apple has introduced the Share Item Location feature, which is compatible with AirTag and other items.
While Find My previously had a Share Item function meant for ongoing sharing with family or friends, Share Item now allows an item to be added to a person’s Find My app for real-time location tracking.
In contrast, Share Item Location is intended for temporary use, specifically in instances when an item is lost.
Steps to Utilize the New iOS 18.2 AirTag Feature
To activate this new feature, ensure you have iOS 18.2 installed, and then follow these steps:
- Launch the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
- Navigate to the Items tab
- Select the AirTag or other missing item
- Scroll down until you find ‘Share Item Location’
- Proceed through the pop-up prompts to enable sharing
The Share Item Location feature generates a link that includes a map and displays your item’s live location.
Here’s how Apple describes it:
Users can create a Share Item Location link within the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Those who receive the link can view a website that shows the item’s location on an interactive map. This website updates automatically with the new location data and timestamps the last update.
This addition proves particularly beneficial for tracking lost luggage, prompting Apple to collaborate with airlines to incorporate support into their current customer service frameworks. Over 15 airlines are planning to offer support soon, with several major carriers already on board.
Crucial Privacy Information
Users should note that although Apple’s system is designed with privacy in mind, the company acknowledges that individuals you share the link with will have access to specific information about you.
According to the Find My app: “The item’s serial number and your Apple Account email or phone number will be visible.”
This feature is purposeful, ensuring that airlines or other third parties can easily reach out to you while searching for your item. Still, it’s an important detail to keep in mind.
