Several streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV+, are already equipped with HDR10+ support. Disney+ is set to follow suit and offer content in this advanced high dynamic range format shortly.
HDR10+ Video Arriving on Disney+
This announcement was made at CES 2025 by Marc Finer from Communication Research Inc., representing the organization that oversees HDR10+ technology certification and management. According to Finer, HDR10+ content will be accessible on Disney+, allowing users with compatible devices to enjoy movies and series with enhanced dynamic range.
For those who may not be aware, HDR10+ is a video technology that offers high dynamic range and competes with Dolby Vision. Both formats utilize HDR metadata for each video frame, facilitating real-time adjustments in display settings to provide richer contrast and increased brightness.
“HDR10+ dynamic metadata delivers numerous advantages, including enhanced brightness and contrast, solid standardization, straightforward implementation, global certification, and the absence of licensing fees,” as detailed by MediaPlayNews. This technology was co-developed by Samsung and Panasonic and is now compatible with more than 13,000 devices, including the latest Apple TV 4K model.
While the announcement is exciting, specific details about when the first HDR10+ content will be available on Disney+ have yet to be revealed. To fully benefit from this technology, users will need devices that support HDR10+.
