DJI Osmo Mobile 7P: Exploring Its Multifunctional Module

According to our affiliate site DroneDJ, DJI unveiled the latest Osmo Mobile 7 gimbal series on Tuesday, offering two distinct models. I’ve recently tested various smartphone gimbals in my pursuit of vlogging, and I was fortunate enough to receive an early invitation from DJI to try out the new Osmo Mobile 7P, which boasts an exciting new hardware feature.

Before diving into my experience, it’s essential to highlight that the Osmo Mobile 7P is the premium variant of the gimbal, while a more budget-friendly option is also available. The model in my hands is the high-end version, and I’ll outline the differences between the two in this article.

Introducing the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P

The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P is presented in a compact package that contains the gimbal, a magnetic phone clamp, two USB-C cables, a storage pouch, and the innovative Multifunctional Module. The lower-priced Osmo Mobile 7 model comes in light gray, whereas the 7P version is entirely black.

The phone clamp magnetically attaches to the gimbal, and the magnets are impressively powerful, so you won’t need to worry about your device falling off. DJI also offers a MagSafe mount for iPhone users, but it must be purchased separately for $19, and it unfortunately does not work with the new Multifunctional Module.

To set up the Osmo Mobile gimbal, users must download DJI’s Mimo app and pair the device via Bluetooth. The app has been refined for the latest gimbal models, incorporating ActiveTrack 7.0 – an upgraded version of the brand’s object-tracking technology that can now detect multiple subjects within a frame and allow users to easily switch focus with just a tap.

DJI’s gimbals have consistently excelled in stabilization, and the company claims that the three-axis stabilization technology has improved once again. During my walking recordings with an iPhone 16 Pro Max, the video output was remarkably stable, and the movements were fluid. Additionally, I appreciate the integrated selfie-stick that makes it easy to film yourself.

Exploring the Multifunctional Module

A standout feature of the Osmo Mobile 7P is the included Multifunctional Module, which can be magnetically attached to the phone clamp, augmenting the gimbal’s functionality.

This module includes its own tracking sensor, eliminating the need for the DJI app to harness the company’s object-tracking capabilities. It can detect subjects and manage gimbal movements, regardless of which camera app you’re using on your smartphone. I conducted some trials using the iPhone’s Apple Camera app, and the system performed as anticipated.

The Multifunctional Module also features an adjustable brightness light with color temperature settings. I was particularly impressed by the brightness, which is adequate for achieving a decent shot in low-light scenarios. However, the module does tend to become quite hot and drains the battery rapidly when the light is in use.

An added bonus of the module is its ability to connect directly with the Mic Mini transmitter, enabling you to capture high-quality audio. This feature significantly simplifies the process for filmmakers.

Additional Insights

The gimbal controls are user-friendly and straightforward, which I appreciate—sometimes simplicity is key. The Osmo Mobile 7P can also function as a power bank for your phone via the USB-C connection, and it includes a built-in tripod for added convenience.

DJI claims up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge, but this duration drops if you are utilizing the Multifunctional Module.

Moreover, I recently had the opportunity to test the DJI Mic Mini microphones, which have proven to be among the highest quality portable wireless microphones I’ve ever encountered, delivering exceptionally clear audio.

Is the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P a Worthwhile Investment?

As previously mentioned, DJI has a reputation for producing high-quality products, and the Osmo Mobile 7P continues that legacy. If you’re in search of a reliable gimbal to elevate your video quality, this new model is well worth your consideration.

The Osmo Mobile 7P represents a solid combination of build quality, user-friendliness, and additional accessories to enhance your filming experience.

The Osmo Mobile 7P is priced at $149, while the standard Osmo Mobile 7 is available for $89. However, the latter does not come equipped with a selfie-stick or the control dial for zoom and light adjustments. Additionally, the more affordable model lacks the Multifunctional Module, which can be purchased separately for $49.
