The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas didn’t immediately comment Thursday regarding the implications of the lease termination or the consequences for the employees at the office.
The Southern District of Texas is currently comprised of seven divisions with federal district courts located in Houston, Galveston, Victoria, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, McAllen, and Laredo, as noted on the website.
First established in 1975, the Corpus Christi Division encompasses Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Live Oak, Nueces, and San Patricio counties, which collectively house a population exceeding 555,000.
This district ranks among the busiest in the nation, with over 200 attorneys handling more federal criminal cases against defendants than in many other districts. It represents approximately 9 million people across 43 counties, spanning 44,000 square miles from Houston to the Mexico border.
DOGE also announced the closures of U.S. attorney’s offices in Lufkin, Texas; Toledo, Ohio; Muskogee, Oklahoma; and Sioux City, Iowa.
