Many members of Barrymore’s family, who were also performers, had a long history of addiction. Her aunt Diana Barrymore acknowledged using drugs and alcohol in her memoir Too Much Too Soon, while her grandpa John Barrymore, a Shakespearean actor in the 1920s and 1930s, drank himself to death. Additionally, John Drew Barrymore, Barrymore’s father, has battled alcoholism. “I think, for me, stopping drinking is one of the most honoring things I can do to the Barrymore name because we have all been such hedonists,” she stated in an exclusive interview with People Magazine. The actor who played Donnie Darko went on, “Don’t look to me as the pillar of health and wellness and having it all together.”It’s like, what are you thinking? For our family, this didn’t work, therefore I’m going to quit. “Maybe my kids and their kids will benefit more from me being the one to sever that link in the chain. “We have to fight genetic follies that our families bring to us.” Throughout her career, Barrymore has been honest about her challenges.
