*Approximately 1.1 million Americans still have the opportunity to claim a stimulus payment of up to $1,400 from the federal government, but time is running out.
The IRS is encouraging anyone who did not receive the third stimulus check, which was distributed during the pandemic under the American Rescue Plan of 2021, to file their 2021 tax return by April 15, 2025. This is the last chance to access the Recovery Rebate Credit, which provides funds for those who were overlooked in the previous payments.
According to The Independent, eligibility is determined by income. Single filers earning up to $75,000 and married couples with a combined income of up to $150,000 can receive the full amount—$1,400 for individuals and $2,800 for couples. Individuals with incomes slightly above these limits may still qualify for partial payments, though these benefits fully phase out at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for couples. Dependents are also eligible for the full amount, regardless of their age. Payments will be automatically disbursed via paper checks, using the banking information supplied on 2023 tax returns.
The IRS has stressed that this is a firm deadline. There will be no extensions or second chances for those who miss the April 15 deadline. Missing this date could mean permanently losing the money, which would then revert to the U.S. Treasury. Taxpayers typically have three years to claim refunds, but the IRS has already distributed $2.4 billion earlier this year to individuals who filed late and qualified.
The agency warns that those who delay until the last moment may face delays, which could jeopardize their eligibility. For those who did not file in 2021, the average unclaimed refund is around $781, not counting the potential $1,400 stimulus payment. To ensure they do not miss out, eligible individuals should submit their 2021 tax returns as soon as possible.
