Apple is set to introduce iPadOS 19 at WWDC 2025 in June. While many rumors are centered around a new visionOS-inspired design, a recent report suggests that Apple aims to align the iPad’s operating system “more closely with macOS.” While this sounds promising, my expectations are tempered. However, there are several significant modifications that could already bring iPadOS 19 closer to the macOS experience.
Feature Requests for iPadOS 19
A feature I truly miss on the iPad is Clamshell mode. My MacBook is constantly connected to my Studio Display, and I prefer using it with the lid down for a focused view on a single screen. Unfortunately, with the iPad, if I connect an external keyboard and mouse, I cannot disable the iPad screen without disrupting the flow. For a device aiming to replace a computer, implementing Clamshell mode is crucial.
There are many ways Apple could enhance the iPad experience with external monitors, such as providing more interface scaling options akin to what macOS offers.
I also find it frustrating that I cannot play audio through the iPad’s built-in speakers when it’s connected to an external display. This works seamlessly with Apple’s Studio Display, which has excellent speakers, but it falters with displays lacking sound capabilities. On the topic of audio, iPadOS could benefit from improved management of multiple audio outputs, ensuring smooth playback without interruptions.
An additional small yet impactful detail would be the capability to resize the Dock. On macOS, the Dock can be customized to any size. In contrast, the iPadOS Dock adjusts based on the number of apps present. Having fewer apps makes the Dock appear larger on the screen, a feature I personally dislike. Apple, please allow us to resize the Dock in iPadOS.
There are also numerous other enhancements to consider, such as a more user-friendly Files app, simplified custom font installations, support for multiple user accounts, and an expanded collection of keyboard shortcuts. While I don’t anticipate Apple will completely transform iPadOS into macOS, these tweaks would significantly enhance the overall iPad user experience.
