Are you missing out on free money? You could be entitled to a $1,400 stimulus check from the federal government. If you haven’t received one yet, there may still be time for eligible individuals to meet the approaching deadline.
The Internal Revenue Service began distributing roughly $2.4 billion in December to 1 million taxpayers in the form of Recovery Rebate Credit checks that were left unclaimed. However, the final eligibility deadline is fast approaching.
Additionally, the IRS reports that 1.1 million Americans may be forgoing their 2021 income tax refunds due to unfiled tax returns, totaling an estimated $1 billion in unclaimed funds. This deadline is also approaching, and missing it will result in the funds being transferred to the U.S. Treasury.
In Florida, the IRS indicates that taxpayers are collectively owed about $61,087,200. About 69,800 individuals who have yet to file their 2021 taxes could each receive an average reimbursement of $732.
Here’s what you need to know to determine your eligibility for a stimulus check in Florida and the filing deadline.
Who is eligible for the stimulus check?
According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), over a million taxpayers did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax return.
This refundable credit was available to individuals who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments (or stimulus checks) during the COVID-19 pandemic.
How can I claim the check? What amount will it be?
No additional action is required on your part to claim it. Payments will be issued automatically.
The IRS has stated that checks can reach a maximum amount of $1,400 and will be distributed via paper checks or direct deposits into the bank account provided with a 2023 tax return. A separate notification letter will accompany the payment.
What if I haven’t filed my 2021 taxes? What is the deadline?
You have until April 15, 2025, to submit prior-year tax returns.
The IRS mentioned that you might still qualify for the check, but only those who have filed their taxes will receive one.
Furthermore, individuals must file their 2021 taxes to claim any refunds that may be owed to them.
