The co-founder of the ETH blockchain, Vitalik Buterin, discussed his predictions for Ethereum in the post-Merge age at the ETH Community Conference in Paris.

After the Merge, Buterin said as he wrapped up the session, ETH will only be roughly 55% finished. When the present Ethereum mainnet proof-of-work (PoW) protocol “merges” with the Beacon Chain evidence (PoS) blockchain technology, it will remain as PoS.

Ethereum Merge Has Traders On The Edge

Where does ETH stand in the aftermath of the Merge? Many people have considered the Merge to be the network’s grand finale. However, ETH will now focus on “the Surge, the Verge, the Purge, and the Splurge,” according to Buterin. On July 30, Ethereum’s mainnet, or live version, officially launched. So it seems appropriate to consider what ETH users might anticipate following the Merge. The “Surge” refers to Ethereum introducing mechanisms that will enable the production of layer 2 or companion products, such as sharding and rollups, and so make it simpler for users to function on the Ethereum network.

These systems will make the network more extensible (scalable). Verkle trees, which will also address the issue of scalability, will be introduced in the following phase. Buterin claims that Verkle trees offer a “strong enhancement to Merkle proofs that allow for substantially reduced proof volumes.” The so-called Verge will lower node sizes and optimize storage. In the end, this will increase the scalability of Ethereum. For context, Merkle trees transform data blocks into lengthy strands of code in order to provide trustworthy encryption.

The newest informational units, known as leaves, are gathered to create branches. The Merkle root, which holds all the prior information, is then traced as a result of this. This approach was initially tested on the Bitcoin blockchain before being modified for ETH. This last phase is still decades away, and there will undoubtedly be bumps in the road as with every technological advancement. Given that the Merge has taken far longer than anticipated when the Splurge eventually happens, the ETH network will enter a well-earned celebration period.
