EU iPhone Users Now Able to Choose Google Maps as Their Default Navigation App

On Friday, Google launched a significant update for Google Maps users on iOS, particularly for those located in the European Union. With this new version of the application, iPhone users can designate Google Maps as their primary navigation app, effectively replacing Apple Maps.

You can now select Google Maps as your default navigation application – EU exclusive

According to Macerkopf, Google Maps is now available as an option in the settings for default navigation apps on iOS. This enhancement permits Google Maps to serve as the default application on iPhones for opening addresses found online, rather than using Apple Maps.

This update follows closely on the heels of WhatsApp’s recent change, which allows iPhone users to set it as their default application for calls and texts.

While the capacity to select default iOS apps was introduced as part of regulations necessitated by the European Union, Apple ultimately made the feature generally available. However, the option to select a navigation app other than Apple Maps will exclusively be available to EU users with iOS 18.4, anticipated for public release in the coming days.

In addition to modifying default apps for navigation, calls, and texts, iPhone users can also choose default apps for email, call filtering, web browsing, translation, password management, payment methods (in select regions), and keyboards. Users can access these settings by navigating to Settings > Apps > Default Apps on their iOS devices.

For users of Google Maps, ensure that you have the most recent version of the app installed. It is available for free from the App Store.
