Apple introduced a new iPhone application this week, named Invites (download here). It’s an enjoyable tool for coordinating events with others. However, it includes several features that are restricted to specific users. Here’s a breakdown of who can access Apple’s latest app and its assorted functionalities.
How to install the Invites app
Who can download it? iPhone users with iOS 18
Unfortunately, the Invites app is not available for Android users.
Additionally, it cannot be accessed by iPhone users still operating on iOS 17 or earlier versions. To use Apple’s new app, you need to have the latest OS version, iOS 18, which was released last fall.
How to create new invites
Who can create invites? iCloud+ or Apple One subscribers
To create your event invite, you must have an iCloud+ subscription.
iCloud+ is Apple’s premium service offering more iCloud storage and various enhanced features like iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, HomeKit Secure Video, among others.
Even if you opt for Apple’s basic $0.99/month iCloud+ plan, you will still be able to create and send invites.
Note: If you’re subscribed to any Apple One bundle, you already have access to iCloud+ and Apple Invites.
How to accept an invite
Who can accept invites? Anyone with an email address
If you’ve received an event invite through Apple Invites, you can choose to accept or decline it without being an iCloud+ subscriber.
There’s no need for an Apple Account either.
All you need is your email address.
Collaborative playlists
Who can collaborate? Apple Music subscribers
The Invites app enables you to create a shared Apple Music playlist for your event, allowing guests to contribute. It’s a fantastic way to let attendees have a say in the event’s musical atmosphere.
As the event organizer, you must have an active Apple Music subscription to initiate a shared playlist. This is probably expected.
However, this requirement applies to your guests as well. For invitees to modify the shared playlist, they too must be Apple Music subscribers.
Photo album sharing feature
Who can share photos? Users with an Apple Account
One of my favorite functionalities of Apple Invites is the option to include a Shared Photo Album for your event.
This feature serves as a centralized location for guests to upload and exchange all the photos and videos they capture—and for you to do the same.
To take part in a shared album for an event, you simply need a free Apple Account. You don’t even require an iPhone; you can upload photos directly through the web version at iCloud.com/invites.
