Final Cut Camera Now Supports Log-Encoded HEVC Video Capture

After the updates to Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro, Apple has also revamped its Final Cut Camera app for iPhone. The latest version allows users to capture Log videos in the HEVC codec, along with the capability to preview Log videos using the Apple Log LUT, among other enhancements. What’s new with Final Cut Camera for iPhone

A significant update to Final Cut Camera is the introduction of Log-encoded HEVC video capture. Previously, Log was limited to ProRes videos, which consume considerably more storage space. The new feature enables users to exploit the enhanced flexibility and dynamic range of Log, all while working with smaller HEVC files.

The update also introduces a feature to activate LUT previews while recording in Log, allowing users to visualize the “vibrancy of the original scene” in either SDR or HDR using the Apple Log LUT. For users with iPhone 16 Pro, this update supports 4K video capture at 120fps for stunning cinematic slow motion.

Additionally, Apple is introducing advanced tilt and roll indicators to assist users in framing their shots effectively.

For those who may not be aware, Final Cut Camera is a tool from Apple that empowers creators to “wirelessly connect and remotely control each video angle with robust professional settings.” Initially launched as an auxiliary tool for managing the iPhone camera from an iPad, it stands as a full-fledged app on the iPhone as well.

Using the app, users can tweak settings such as white balance and manual focus while also monitoring zebras and audio levels. It also offers control over ISO and shutter speed, facilitating easy transitions between resolutions and video formats. The user interface is intuitive and displays the iPhone’s battery life and available storage.

With Final Cut Camera, transferring media to a Final Cut project on the iPad or saving footage to connected external storage is also effortless. The app is available for free on the App Store and requires an iPhone equipped with iOS 17.6 or later (some features may necessitate the latest iPhone models).
