New Yorkers may still have the opportunity to obtain a stimulus check of up to $1,400 from the Internal Revenue Service.

In December, the IRS announced that they would be issuing automatic payments to eligible individuals who failed to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax filings.

Here’s what you need to know about these stimulus checks.

What is the Recovery Rebate Credit and who qualifies for it?

The Recovery Rebate Credit is a refundable credit available to those who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments or stimulus payments, as stated by the IRS. If you filed your 2021 tax return but omitted the Recovery Rebate Credit section or entered $0 when you were eligible, you might receive a stimulus check soon.

What if I didn’t file my 2021 tax return?

You might still be eligible to receive the stimulus check if you submit your 2021 tax return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by April 15.

How much am I entitled to?

While payments may differ, the IRS states that the maximum amount you could receive is $1,400, with a total of $2.4 billion being distributed nationwide.

How do I obtain my stimulus check?

The payments will be automatically sent to those eligible, so there is no action required on your part to receive your stimulus check, according to the IRS. Payments began being issued automatically in December.

Eligible taxpayers will receive a notification letter regarding the payment, and the funds will be either directly deposited or mailed as a paper check.
