Fraudsters Impersonate IRS to Offer Fake Stimulus Checks

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – We’re issuing a Consumer First Alert regarding a scam that mimics legitimate sources.

Scammers are exploiting the news about genuine stimulus payments being issued by the IRS.

Be cautious of a fraudulent text message claiming you are eligible to receive $1,400 from the IRS.

Check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) online scam tracker; many individuals are reporting this issue at the moment.

The message informs you of your eligibility for a $1,400 stimulus payment, accompanied by a deceptive link that resembles an IRS website.

Here’s where it gets complicated: the stimulus payments are indeed real.

The IRS has confirmed that over a million taxpayers who failed to claim a recovery rebate credit will receive these payments by late January, with the highest amount being $1,400.

The BBB warns that scammers are attempting to deceive you.

“Scammers are capitalizing on this situation. They reach out to consumers who see the text, get excited, and want to believe it’s legitimate. However, if you are eligible for that rebate, it will come to you automatically without any actions on your part,” explained Lisa Schiller from the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau.

Just remember, you don’t need to do anything.

The IRS is aware that you did not claim that credit on your 2021 tax return, as they have that information on file.

According to the BBB, authentic IRS communications are sent via postal mail, not through email, social media, or text.

“Never click on links in unsolicited messages, particularly in texts. Be wary of messages that create a sense of urgency. Scammers thrive on making you feel rushed to respond,” Schiller advised.

The first step, according to the BBB, is to verify any communication you receive.

Visit irs.gov and consult the BBB for more information.

Always avoid clicking on links and take your time to investigate.

Scammers often use tactics that provoke a sense of urgency.

If you suspect you have fallen victim to a scam, make sure to report it.
