After the recent announcement, Gems—customizable versions of Gemini—are now more accessible to free users on both the Android and iOS applications.
Gemini provides five pre-designed Gems:
- Brainstormer: Effortlessly discover inspiration. New ideas for events, gifts, businesses, and beyond.
- Career guide: Unleash your career potential. Obtain a comprehensive plan to enhance your skills and reach your professional objectives.
- Coding partner: Improve your programming abilities. Receive support to create projects and learn throughout the process.
- Learning coach: Assisting you in grasping and practicing new concepts. Share what you want to learn, and I’ll help you initiate the journey.
- Writing editor: Enhance your writing quality. Get insightful, constructive feedback on everything from grammar to structure.
Nonetheless, the true advantage lies in crafting your own Gems and providing instructions that can “help you streamline repetitive or challenging tasks.” After inputting a paragraph or so, Gemini can rephrase it based on defined “Purpose and Goals” as well as “Behaviors and Rules,” such as specifying the desired length and tone. Moreover, you can upload files for Gems to reference and assign them a name.
Google introduced Gems during its I/O event last May and began distributing them to Advanced subscribers in August. This newfound free availability follows previous features like image generation, document upload/analysis, and Deep Research.
Gems can be accessed on mobile devices, but creations can only be made at gemini.google.com. Look for the Gem manager in the account menu (on mobile) or in the sidebar (on the web).
Eligibility is available for free users aged 18 and above, with the initial rollout on the web. We’re now witnessing expanded Gem availability within the Gemini Android application.
Update: We are also beginning to see free Gems availability on the iPhone application as well.
