Every day, it seems like a plethora of finance apps flood the App Store. Some are centered around budgeting, while others deal with credit card points, investing, or aim to cover all aspects. While perusing X, I stumbled upon a tweet where someone expressed their desire for a finance app that could simply track three things: their spending for today, this week, and this month. The notion was refreshingly straightforward, yet incredibly useful. Just a few hours later, I noticed that developer Steven Zhang had actually created it in just two hours. Here it is.
Big Numbers App
True to the spirit of the original tweet, this app maintains a minimalist focus. The goal is to provide a quick overview of what you’ve spent in the past day, week, and month. I pride myself on being financially organized. I use numerous automated tracking apps, but also keep a Google Sheet where I manually log each transaction. This allows me to swiftly check that my spending aligns with my budget. I believe this app could effectively replace my manual financial tracking.
The core principle here is simplicity and value. The process is as follows:
- Upon launching the app, you’ll be prompted to link a credit or debit card.
- Log into your card account.
- Your dashboard will then populate with your spending data.
- And you’re all set!
As illustrated above, the app displays three key metrics: your daily, weekly, and monthly spending figures. You can tap on each to view detailed transactional data, which is a nice feature. The remaining options are located in the settings menu, where you can activate FaceID, remove your account, and change the time period calculations from either rolling or fixed. Personally, I prefer the fixed option to monitor my monthly spending. A significant advantage of this app is that it accounts for pending credit card transactions, a feature often overlooked by other apps!
Final Thoughts
I have communicated with the developers, and there are some important points to note. Firstly, the app is currently in TestFlight but should be available soon, within the next few days. Secondly, at this moment, the app allows you to track only one credit or debit card, but future updates will enable integration with additional cards and accounts for a comprehensive view of your spending. Lastly, an update will introduce a widget feature, which I am particularly excited about. So if the app isn’t available yet when you read this, be sure to join the waitlist here.
This is a fantastic concept—an effortless way to keep track of your current month’s expenses. Most people have a rough idea of their income but struggle to recall their spending. For instance, if you know you earn $2000 a month and the Big Numbers app indicates you’ve spent $1500, you can quickly ascertain that you’ve saved $500! That alone justifies its place in my finance app lineup.
What do you think? Would you find this app useful? Would you be willing to pay for it? Let’s discuss in the comments below! Don’t forget to follow Steven Zhang for real-time updates on its progress—I certainly will!
