This week, it was revealed that the Gemini app is set to introduce the feature for generating Audio Overview podcasts, with Android and iOS users starting to gain access to this functionality today.
Audio Overviews are now available for free Gemini users as well as paid Advanced subscribers in English, with additional language support expected shortly.
On mobile, when you upload a document or presentation, a new “Generate Audio Overview” suggestion chip will appear next to the “Talk Live about this” option (which has yet to be fully rolled out on Android). Additionally, you can use the overflow menu in Deep Research reports to create a podcast.
After selecting this option, it takes a few moments for an engaging dialogue between two AI hosts to be produced. Google will notify you once it’s available. Alternatively, you can access your prior chats by navigating to the history in the top-left corner of the home screen. Prior to this launch, users couldn’t view historical Audio Overviews on mobile.
Interestingly, the Gemini app does not include a built-in audio player. Instead, tapping the “Gemini Audio Overview” opens the audio file (.m4a) in a web browser. This means you’ll be using the default audio player of Chrome or iOS, which does facilitate easy downloads. This is peculiar considering that the web version at gemini.google.com offers an inline player for listening to Audio Overviews.
The duration of these podcasts can extend for several minutes, with the goal of summarizing the content, creating connections between topics, fostering an engaging dialogue, and offering unique insights. It’s important to note that file-based Audio Overviews rely solely on the uploaded material and do not pull from real-world knowledge, which differs from the podcasts generated from Deep Research data.
