After the online reveal on Tuesday, Gemini Canvas has begun rolling out on both Android and iOS with a revamped plus menu.
In place of a list, the updated ‘plus’ menu displays Camera, Gallery, Files, and Drive (not available on iOS) side-by-side. Below these pill-shaped buttons, you’ll find shortcuts for:
- Deep Research: Access detailed answers
- Canvas: Create documents and code
Comparison: Old vs. New
The Deep Research feature eliminates the need for selecting a model. Currently, Google has not clarified which model is being utilized, but it’s operating on: 2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental).
If a particular feature is not supported by a model, the buttons will appear grayed out. On gemini.google.com, these buttons show up in the prompt bar. This week, you can also encounter a new “Files in this chat” button located at the top-right corner.
The mobile version of Canvas does not support a split-pane interface like on the desktop, which affects usability. You can open and read drafts, but any edits necessitate exiting the document and starting a new prompt in the chat. The option to highlight and edit is not available in this format. However, there are shortcuts for previewing and moving to the next version in the top bar for quick access to revisions.
The rollout of the plus menu redesign for the Gemini app on both Android and iOS is in progress, following the recent deployment of Audio Overviews for mobile.
