Google Lens Enhances ‘Screen Search’ Feature in Chrome for iOS

Google is enhancing Lens visual search functionality in Chrome for iOS by introducing a new “Screen Search” feature that mirrors the Circle to Search option found on Android. In addition, Google Lens is now capable of recognizing a wider variety of unique images.

The Chrome browser on iPhone and iPad already comes with a Lens feature that allows users to take pictures or analyze screenshots.

Now, while browsing the web or watching videos, you can utilize “Search Screen with Google Lens.” Instead of needing to manually capture a screenshot, you’ll discover this new shortcut located in the three-dot overflow menu.

A shimmering overlay will occur on the display, prompting you to “Circle or tap anywhere to search.” (You may also highlight text.) Search results, which can include AI Overviews, will appear in a bottom sheet, with option to open pages in a new tab.

This feature is essentially the same as Android’s Circle to Search functionality, and is also being introduced to the Google app on iOS as “Search this Screen” in the top-right corner’s three-dot menu.

The rollout of Google Lens Screen Search is currently ongoing with Chrome version 133 for iOS, alongside the most recent version of the Google (Search) app.

Additionally, Google attributes “advanced AI models” for enabling Lens to “extend its capabilities and offer insights into a broader array of novel or unique images.” Users can expect results in the form of AI Overviews, which allow for queries without having to manually add a question.

For instance, if you spot an intriguing car and want to learn about the unusual texture on its hood, simply tap the camera icon in the Search bar to capture a photo with Lens. You’ll receive an AI Overview to quickly understand what you’re observing, complete with links to useful online resources.

This expanded recognition feature is being rolled out this week to “English-language users in regions where AI Overviews are provided.” Initially, this will be available through the Google app on Android and iOS, before being extended to the desktop and mobile versions of Chrome.
