Ellen Pompeo, who plays the character of Meredith Grey in the hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy, has recently paid tribute to Giacomo Gianniotti after his character was killed off the show. In the crossover episode on Thursday, the show collaborated with Station 19 which showed the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial fighting tooth and nail to save the life of Dr. Andrew DeLuca.

Giacomo plays the role of Dr. DeLuca, who was stabbed when trying to nab a sex trafficker. With his decreasing condition post-emergency surgery, the doctors couldn’t do much as he died on the operating table.

After the episode aired, Pompeo penned a touching tribute to the actor. After posting a selfie that she had with Giacomo, she spoke about how Grey’s Anatomy would miss a character with the amount of zeal that Giacomo displayed. She also thanked him for constantly being a level-headed actor even when the show had become pretty monotonous. And, with Ellen Pompeo cast as Meredith Grey ever since the first episode, she knows a thing or two about how boring TV series can get after a point.

After thanking him for his performance, Pompeo advised him to go out and explore the world. Giacomo, on his part, reposted the photo with a heartfelt caption where he thanked the long-standing actress for their friendship. He spoke about how he always admired the way Pompeo would go about her scenes in Grey’s Anatomy- the same level of zeal and passion 15 years into the show.

Krista Vernoff, the showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy rationalized that their decision to end the character of Dr. DeLuca was carefully planned. Although they didn’t like it- as they were all in awe of the brilliant actor, they had already discovered and unearthed every single facet of the character. And just like everything, it had to end.

Nonetheless, Grey’s Anatomy would remember the character fondly- just like the show has paid tribute to the host of characters that have left over the last 15 years.
