Gurman: Apple Considering Search Ads for Maps Application

As reported in Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is revisiting the idea of generating revenue from its Maps application through search advertisements. This follows a similar strategy already implemented with its News and Stocks applications, aimed at enhancing its internal advertising revenue.

This isn’t the first instance of Apple considering this approach. Gurman notes that a few years ago, Apple evaluated the possibility of integrating search ads, allowing companies to pay for improved search rankings:

A few years back, Apple teams looked into the integration of search ads for its Maps app. This system would be akin to Google Maps, where a business could pay Apple to ensure their restaurant or establishment ranks higher in search results.

The monetization concept has resurfaced in discussions within Apple, particularly during recent meetings focused on search advertisements. Gurman also hints at the possibility of specific locations featuring ‘more prominently on the map.’

Currently, there is no set timeline for the potential rollout of search ads within Apple Maps. Work on the engineering side has not yet commenced. Nonetheless, Apple is actively considering how to implement this change.
