Gurman: Apple Developing New M5 iPad Pro, Production Set to Begin Later This Year

The latest issue of the Power On newsletter reports that Apple is currently in the “late testing” stage for the new M5 iPad Pro. This upcoming device is expected to be among the first to utilize Apple’s new M5 silicon technology.

The M5 iPad Pro will likely be a modest upgrade featuring the new M5 chip. Last year, the iPad Pro underwent a redesign that introduced OLED displays, a sleeker form factor, and a newly positioned front-facing camera for landscape mode. According to Gurman, the codenames for the new models include J817, J818, J820, and J821.

Currently, the M5 iPad Pro is “in late testing” and is “set for production in the latter half of this year.” It promises to be one of the first products equipped with the M5 chip:

The company aims to position the iPad Pro as one of the initial devices to adopt the next-generation M5 chip. The new variants, designated with codenames J817, J818, J820, and J821, are in the final stages of testing at Apple and are expected to enter production in the latter half of this year.

In addition to the M5 iPad Pro, Apple is also developing a new M6 iPad Pro that will feature its proprietary modems, although these won’t launch until 2027. Furthermore, Apple is preparing new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with the M5 chip, neither of which will receive a redesign. Gurman also confirms that a complete overhaul of the MacBook Pro is anticipated for 2026.
