Gurman: Delays in iOS 19 Will Lead to a Slower, More Staggered Software Release

The release of iOS 18 has featured a staggered introduction of new functionalities, highlighted by the densely packed updates 18.1 and 18.2. As reported by Mark Gurman, this arrangement has led to unforeseen delays in the progression of iOS 19’s development.

Resource Allocation: iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence

Mark Gurman shared on X:

I am continually informed that the gradual introduction of features in iOS 18 through to 18.4 is causing some of the functionalities planned for iOS 19 to be postponed. As a result, we may see a prolonged rollout of features in the next cycle as well. Engineers are currently occupied with iOS 18 projects instead of making the typical transition to the next OS.

Denoting a significant effort from Apple, iOS 18 has offered sweeping updates in its initial September launch, followed by two exceptionally rich updates in 18.1 and 18.2.

Furthermore, Apple Intelligence’s role has been substantial, introducing an initial suite of AI features in 18.1, along with more captivating enhancements in the recent 18.2 update.

However, iOS 18.3 looms ahead, coupled with a substantial launch anticipated with 18.4 in April.

This context sheds light on why the forthcoming iOS 19 rollout might be more gradual than Apple initially envisioned—potentially even resulting in a smaller-scale release.

A Perspective from DMN

From my standpoint, Apple’s execution of iOS 18 has been quite thrilling. The company kicked off with a solid initial release in 18.0, and since then, we have witnessed significant feature additions every month or two.

In previous years, sometimes there was so much packed into the primary fall iOS release that I overlooked some of the subtle changes and updates. This staggered approach provides each new feature room to stand out, creating an environment where the iPhone continuously evolves with fresh additions. I welcome a similar rollout for iOS 19.
