Gurman: Major Overhaul of iPadOS 19 to Make It ‘More Similar to macOS’

As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is set to revamp iPadOS 19 to make it “more similar to macOS.” This decision comes in response to years of feedback regarding the limitations of the iPad’s software.

This upgrade will occur alongside significant changes throughout Apple’s platform, including a complete redesign of the iPhone with iOS 19 and the Mac’s first major redesign in five years.

Gurman provides insight into the iPadOS 19 update:

I’ve been informed that this year’s update will emphasize productivity, multitasking, and management of app windows — aiming to make the device function more like a Mac. This enhancement has been overdue, as iPad power users have long urged Apple to boost the tablet’s capabilities.

This development has been anticipated for quite some time. The hardware in iPads has exceeded the potential of its software for at least four years, which has been a common frustration among enthusiasts. It’s important to note that while the update aims to be ‘more like macOS’, it won’t be a direct replica, so some limitations may still persist.

Nevertheless, this appears to be a significant advancement in the right direction.
