The expanding functionality of Apple Intelligence has increased the storage demands on your device but has also introduced new controls over the enabled features. Here’s a guide on how to turn off specific Apple Intelligence options on your iPhone and beyond.
Screen Time provides a way to disable three categories of Apple Intelligence features
Apple Intelligence generally presents an all-or-nothing option.
When you enable AI through the Settings app on your iPhone or during the iOS setup process, you’re activating a majority of the Apple Intelligence functionalities.
However, it is possible to selectively reduce these features.
Within Screen Time, Apple offers options to enable or disable three specific categories of Apple Intelligence:
- Image Creation
- Writing Tools
- ChatGPT Extension
The Image Creation category encompasses Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand. Although you cannot disable these features individually, you can turn all of them off with one control.
Writing Tools refers to AI functions that assist in composing, proofreading, or reshaping text.
ChatGPT is straightforward. It might seem a bit unusual since there is a separate toggle for ChatGPT within the Apple Intelligence settings.
Steps to disable specific Apple Intelligence features
To access these options within Screen Time, follow these steps:
- Launch the Settings app
- Navigate to the Screen Time menu
- Select Content & Privacy Restrictions
- Ensure the green toggle at the top is activated
- Then select Intelligence & Siri to access the AI settings
Once you disable a specific feature, you’ll find that even the user interface elements associated with it will vanish.
For instance, turning off Image Creation will eliminate the bright Genmoji icon from the emoji keyboard. Similarly, disabling Writing Tools will remove the corresponding icon from Notes’ toolbar and the copy/paste menu.
Note: In my experience, it may take a moment or require forcing the app to quit before the relevant AI interface features are no longer visible.
