Huffman Confirms Reddit’s Paywall Plans

CEO Steve Huffman has officially confirmed that Reddit is moving forward with plans for a paywall, following previous hints from last summer.

During a pre-recorded Ask Me Anything session featured in the company’s earnings call, Huffman shared details regarding the proposed paid subreddits.

The initial concept was introduced during a prior earnings call in August of the previous year.

Steve Huffman has suggested that some subreddits may adopt a paywall in the future, as Reddit aims to identify new revenue streams.

[He stated] “We will open up new opportunities for different types of subreddits that could offer exclusive content or private sections, among other things.”

Engadget has reported that Huffman has now clearly stated this will involve paid subreddits.

When inquired about the status of paid subreddits, Huffman remarked, “It’s currently a work in progress, so that feature is on its way.” In response to a follow-up question about new features expected in 2025, he confirmed, “Paid subreddits? Yes,” indicating they are planned.

As highlighted by the site, while details remain sparse, it’s possible that certain subreddits may only be accessible to Reddit Premium members.

As previously mentioned, this initiative is likely to face backlash from Reddit users, who have not responded favorably to previous monetization strategies from the company.
