In 2023, a House controlled by Republicans voted to remove U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from her position on the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Fast forward two years, and it appears to be occurring once more.
“Breaking news: Rep. Ilhan Omar has been removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee,” stated an Instagram post on February 19.
The post included a C-SPAN video clip indicating that 218 Republicans had voted to expel Omar from the committee, while 211 Democrats opposed her removal.
However, this clip is outdated, and the news itself does not deserve the label of “breaking.”

During a session on February 2, 2023, the House debated and ultimately voted 218-211 in favor of a resolution put forth by Republicans to remove Omar due to her comments about Israel.
Representative Max Miller, R-Ohio, introduced the resolution, asserting that Omar “disqualified herself from serving on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, which is seen globally as the voice of Congress on issues of international significance and national security.”
This resolution followed bipartisan backlash Omar received in 2019 for remarks that some interpreted as antisemitic. At that time, she apologized for a tweet claiming that support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins,” referencing hundred-dollar bills.
In 2024, yet another claim of “breaking” news emerged online, alleging Omar had been removed from the committee. However, these rumors simply recycled the news from 2023.
Claims that this occurred in 2024 or 2025 are incorrect. We classify them as False.
