North Aurora, IL – Fraudsters are impersonating the IRS to gather personal information from taxpayers. They are sending deceitful text messages claiming that recipients are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus payment.
The Better Business Bureau reports that these messages appear legitimate but lead to phishing websites. Such sites can either install malware or capture personal and financial information.
The IRS does not contact individuals via text, email, or social media platforms, and it will never request sensitive information in this manner.
To protect yourself, verify any communications from the IRS through official channels. Avoid clicking on links found in unexpected messages. Scammers often create an atmosphere of urgency to pressure victims into acting swiftly. Always take the time to verify claims.
Should you receive a suspicious communication, report it to [email protected] and the BBB Scam Tracker.
