Have you ever framed screenshots using Apple device borders? If so, you might be familiar with Federico Viticci’s ‘Apple Frames’ shortcut. Unfortunately, this shortcut has encountered issues in recent months, and it has now been discovered that a bug in iOS 18 is to blame.
Ongoing Shortcuts Bug Affecting PNGs in iOS 18.2
In a recent discussion on Bluesky, Federico Viticci from MacStories elaborated on the challenges faced by Apple Frames since the introduction of iOS 18.
The reason I’ve been unable to update my Apple Frames shortcut for the new devices is a persistent bug in the Shortcuts app on iOS/iPadOS 18 that remains unfixed.
For several months, the Overlay Image action has consistently stripped away the alpha transparency of PNG files.
I’m at a loss for how to circumvent this issue.
Viticci has submitted feedback to Apple in hopes of resolving this bug, but as of the most recent iOS 18.2 beta, no solution has been implemented.
He also points out that numerous Reddit threads indicate similar problems experienced by users of other shortcuts involving PNGs.
Sadly, it’s not unusual for new iOS updates to bring about bugs in the Shortcuts app. Nevertheless, the ongoing nature of this bug, months after the iOS 18 beta was released, coupled with the absence of any practical workaround makes this situation particularly frustrating.
