On Thursday, Meta unveiled an exciting new feature for Instagram users that is especially beneficial for fans of Reels, the platform’s short video feature designed to rival TikTok. This update enables users to fast-forward through Reels videos.
Fast-Forwarding Reels on Instagram is Now Possible
In recent years, both TikTok and Instagram Reels have significantly extended their video length limits. While videos once had a maximum of 15 seconds, they can now extend to several minutes. This has led many users to desire the ability to skip or fast-forward parts of these longer videos.
TikTok already offered a fast-forward feature, and Instagram is following suit with Reels. Users who have access to the update can now watch videos at double speed by pressing and holding either side of the screen during playback (source: TechCrunch).
While many users will likely appreciate this new functionality, some creators may have concerns about how the proliferation of short video formats impacts viewer engagement with longer content.
Additionally, Instagram is currently developing a new mobile video editing app named Edits. Although it was anticipated to launch this month, Meta has postponed its release yet again. This app aims to compete with TikTok’s CapCut by providing features for shooting and editing videos directly from smartphones.
Instagram can be downloaded for free from the App Store. Ensure that you have the most recent version of the app installed to access the new features.
