Apple is set to release an exciting new Home device soon, which I’ve been referring to as the ‘HomePad.’ Here are five key features it will include.
Square 7-inch Display
Initially, Mark Gurman stated that the HomePad would feature “approximately a 6-inch display.” However, in his latest overview of 2025 products, he updated the expected size to 7 inches.
The device is said to resemble a square iPad, roughly comparable to two iPhone 16 Pro Max devices placed side by side. While its size may be smaller than some would prefer, this could help keep its price point more manageable.
New Operating System
The HomePad will feature a completely new operating system, likely termed ‘homeOS.’
According to Gurman, the user interface “appears to blend elements from the Apple Watch operating system and the newly introduced StandBy mode from the iPhone.”
This interface will also adjust dynamically based on your distance from the device. For instance, when viewed from afar, it may present status updates, while a closer approach could shift it to display control options.
As anticipated, based on Gurman’s connection to ‘StandBy,’ the HomePad is expected to include widget support. You’ll likely be able to add these widgets to the Home Screen, similar to how it’s done on the iPhone and iPad.
While it remains uncertain if third-party widgets will be available, there is a strong possibility. Apple has integrated technology into macOS that allows for iPhone widgets to function there, making it logical to extend this feature to the HomePad.
Accessories for Seamless Integration
When standing alone, the HomePad will come across as a basic smart display. However, Apple is developing various mounting solutions and accessories to help it integrate into different home environments.
Gurman notes:
Apple has crafted multiple accessories for the device, including options for wall mounting it like a traditional home security panel. There will also be bases featuring extra speakers to place in areas like the kitchen, on a nightstand, or on a desk.
These additional accessories appear to be another method to keep the HomePad’s price under control (assuming they will be sold separately). They also recognize the necessity that distinct areas in a home will require tailored HomePad configurations.
Siri Enhanced with AI
Apple’s current Home products, including the HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K, lack any AI features from Apple Intelligence, which means they utilize the outdated Siri interface.
In contrast, the HomePad will introduce a new, AI-driven Siri that is already significantly more robust (primarily due to ChatGPT) and will become even more so with the rollout of iOS 18.4.
This upgraded Siri is expected to execute hundreds of new actions across apps, grasp your personal context, and do much more. If it performs as anticipated, users should encounter fewer instances of Siri responding with, “I’m sorry” on the HomePad—a phrase that has become overly common on the current HomePod.
HomePad Features Summary
The HomePad is projected to deliver many more functionalities beyond what has been discussed here, such as acting as a smart home controller, a device for FaceTime calls, and additional capabilities. However, the five features outlined above give a solid preview of the HomePad’s essential functionalities.
