iOS 18.2 Introduces New Language Support for Apple Intelligence in Five Key Areas

Hello, iOS 18.2! The latest update comes with a revamped Mail app, fixes for the Photos app, and a host of new features. Among the most notable additions are advancements in AI capabilities. For the first time, Apple Intelligence has introduced native language support for five regions outside of the United States.

The US English Requirement of iOS 18.1 for Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence made its debut back in October with the iOS 18.1 update, introducing various features like notification summaries, improved writing tools, and the ability to remove unwanted objects from photos, among others.

However, this initial launch came with specific limitations:

  1. An AI-compatible iPhone was necessary.
  2. Your device settings had to be configured to US English.

Users located outside the US could still utilize the new AI features from iOS 18.1 (with the exception of those in the EU and China), but only by selecting US English as their system language.

This was less than ideal, but Apple had assured users that more language options would soon be implemented for Apple Intelligence.

Now, with the arrival of iOS 18.2, the first wave of language options has come to fruition.

New Language Settings Introduced in iOS 18.2

If you are located in any of the following regions, Apple now provides localized English support:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • United Kingdom

This means that your iPhone can be set to the specific English variants for each locale and will receive fully-optimized functionality for Apple Intelligence.

To change your device’s language settings, simply navigate to the Settings app, select General, and then choose Language & Region.

While iOS 18.2 doesn’t expand Apple Intelligence to languages greatly differing from the prior US English settings, the addition of localized English in these five significant regions is definitely a welcome enhancement.

Additionally, Apple is currently working on non-English options, which are expected to roll out in April as part of the iOS 18.4 update.

Have you tested the newly added Apple Intelligence support in any of these locations? How has your experience been? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
