iOS 18.3 Introduces 5 Updates to Apple Intelligence Notification Summaries

Today, Apple has made available iOS 18.3 beta 3 to developers. This update presents several modifications related to the notification summaries feature of Apple Intelligence.

These adjustments were prompted by feedback from various news organizations, including the BBC. A fortnight ago, Apple assured users that an upcoming software update would “better clarify when the displayed text is summarization from Apple Intelligence.”

Here’s what’s new in iOS 18.3 concerning notification summaries for Apple Intelligence:

  • Upon enabling notification summaries, iOS 18.3 will indicate that this feature, similar to all Apple Intelligence features, is still in beta.
  • Users can now turn off notification summaries for specific apps straight from the Lock Screen or Notification Center by swiping, tapping “Options,” and selecting the “Turn Off Summaries” option.
  • In the Lock Screen view, notification summaries will now appear in italicized text to help differentiate them from standard notifications.
  • In the Settings app, Apple has added a warning that notification summaries “may contain errors.”

Moreover, notification summaries have been completely disabled for apps categorized under News & Entertainment for now. This feature will be reinstated for this category in a subsequent software update as Apple works on enhancing the experience.

The developer beta for iOS 18.3 was released today, and a new public beta is anticipated within the next week. Details regarding the public release timeline remain unannounced.
