While work on CarPlay 2 is steadily progressing, Apple has gradually introduced new features to the current version of CarPlay. Last autumn, enhancements powered by Apple Intelligence were added, and more recently, Ford EV users have gained access to NACS routing. With the upcoming iOS 18.4 update, three additional features for CarPlay will be included.
#1: Additional row of app icons
A significant challenge with CarPlay is its need to adapt to a variety of vehicle infotainment systems.
The good news is that iOS 18.4 introduces a valuable upgrade for cars equipped with larger displays.
Testers in the beta have discovered that on certain screen sizes, CarPlay now supports a third row of app icons, which previously only had two.
This added screen space for applications should nicely complement the next enhancement to CarPlay…
#2: Introduction of sports apps
Apple has introduced a new API for developers that allows sports apps to be integrated into CarPlay.
From iOS 18.4 onward, applications that provide sports scores can engage with CarPlay, ensuring you stay updated on your team’s performance while driving.
It may take some time for third-party sports applications to add CarPlay support officially, but we hope to see an update for the Apple Sports app immediately upon the full release of iOS 18.4.
#3: Default navigation apps in EU
The iOS 18.4 update includes a highly anticipated feature for users in the EU: the option to set a default navigation application.
Instead of being limited to Apple Maps, EU users can now choose alternatives like Google Maps as their default navigation service.
This change will significantly enhance the CarPlay experience.
Why? Because you can instruct Siri by saying “Take me to X,” and it will route you using your preferred navigation app. Quick, seamless, and stress-free—just how in-car voice interaction should function.
Summary of CarPlay iOS 18.4 features
While the latest CarPlay updates might not cater to everyone—especially if your vehicle has a smaller display or you reside outside the EU—these features are still a welcome addition.
As we await the rollout of CarPlay 2, any incremental improvement Apple can make to the existing CarPlay is a positive development. Viewed through this lens, iOS 18.4 represents a commendable step in the right direction.
