One of my favorite aspects of Apple Maps is the ability to explore without needing to physically go anywhere—just browsing the app and saving spots I’d like to visit. With the iOS 18 update, this experience has reached new heights.
Exploring is my preferred activity in Apple Maps
Apple Maps serves two main functions for users:
- navigating from point A to B
- and aiding you in discovering new locations
First and foremost, the navigation aspect must be effective. The numerous issues with location data caused significant problems for Apple Maps during its initial launch.
Nonetheless, the majority of my usage revolves around leisurely exploring from the comfort of my home.
I often find myself in bed or lounging on the sofa, checking out different neighborhoods or areas I’m contemplating visiting.
Sometimes this exploration is out of necessity—say, when I’m about to travel and want to see what’s nearby my accommodation.
Yet most of the time, it’s purely for enjoyment.
I’m eager to discover what’s available and what I might be missing, and the Maps app serves as my gateway to virtual exploration.
Living in Manhattan, a relatively compact yet densely populated area, offers countless opportunities for adventure.
With the introduction of iOS 18, Maps has enhanced the exploration experience like never before.
New Save Button in iOS 18
When you explore any place in Apple Maps with iOS 18, you’ll find a new save button (+) located in the upper right corner, right beside the share and ‘x’ icons.
Pressing this ‘+’ offers two distinct benefits:
- It saves the location to your Library
- It also makes the location more noticeable on the map henceforth
One convenient button delivering two significant advantages.
Your Library remains easily reachable within the app, providing a quick glance at all the locations you’re interested in exploring later.
However, the latter benefit has been especially impactful for me.
With a swift tap on the + button, I can continue to browse the map while keeping track of all the places I’ve saved. They are readily accessible whenever I need them, allowing the map to be more tailored to my preferences.
Earlier versions of Apple Maps featured a Guides option that provided similar capabilities but demanded more steps, greater organization, and lacked many of the new Library functionalities now available.
Prior to iOS 18, I relied heavily on Guides, but now I gain most of the same advantages with far less effort and planning.
The introduction of the ‘+’ button on Apple Maps has made saving locations while browsing more efficient and easier than ever.
