Apple is set to introduce its next major software updates, including iPadOS 18.4, which brings a range of exciting new features. Below are four notable additions coming to your iPad soon.
#1: Cooking mode
iPads are arguably Apple’s most adaptable device, used as laptops, sketchbooks, entertainment systems, and much more. Many people, including myself, find them indispensable in the kitchen. A new feature in iPadOS 18.4 is likely to enhance that experience.
The Apple News app is introducing a brand-new Food section exclusively for News+ subscribers, featuring restaurant reviews, culinary lifestyle articles, and, crucially, a plethora of recipes.
Upon launch, tens of thousands of recipes will be available, all designed with a unique cooking mode tailored for the iPad.
When you select a recipe, simply click the Cook button to access a step-by-step guide that assists you throughout the cooking journey. Additionally, you’ll be able to initiate timers directly within the cooking interface.
#2: Sketch in Image Playground
Image Playground has several fun applications, but I can see it becoming particularly popular with kids. The straightforward process of creating AI images is perfect for children (or adults) looking to have fun and experiment on their iPad.
In iPadOS 18.4, Image Playground will introduce a new Sketch style for creating images. This option complements the existing Animation and Illustration features, allowing you to produce images with a hand-drawn appearance. You can even transform existing images from your library to adopt the new Sketch style.
#3: Apple Mail redesign
Although iOS and iPadOS share much of the same core architecture, it’s common for new features to debut on iPhone before making their way to iPad. This was the case with last year’s redesign of the Apple Mail app.
Now, in iPadOS 18.4, the Mail app has received a significant upgrade as well, including new features like:
- automatic categorization of your inbox
- digest view to streamline conversation threads
- sorting options for new and old messages
- contact photos appearing in your inbox
These features function similarly to those on the iPhone, and just like on the iPhone, you can easily disable any changes you prefer to avoid.
#4: Ambient Music
The Control Center is introducing a fresh category of controls for both iPad and iPhone: Ambient Music.
iPadOS 18.4 offers four distinct music options to choose from:
- Chill
- Productivity
- Sleep
- Wellbeing
Each selection corresponds to a specific Apple Music playlist designed to match the mood described. Furthermore, users can personalize their selections by choosing from a curated set of Apple playlists or selecting their own playlists.
iPadOS 18.4 features: wrap-up
This is just a glimpse of the new features arriving with iPadOS 18.4. Additional enhancements are on the way, including upgrades for Apple Intelligence, minor changes in apps like Photos and TV, and beyond.
