As has been previously mentioned, Apple is discontinuing the iPhone 14 and the iPhone SE within the European Union due to regulations that mandate all smartphones offered in that region to have a USB-C port. Following the removal of these models from the online store in select countries, including Switzerland, Apple has now ceased sales of the iPhone 14 and SE across most EU nations.
Apple ceases sale of iPhone 14 and SE 3 in the EU
According to reports from MacRumors and confirmed by DMN, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and the 3rd generation iPhone SE are no longer available for purchase on Apple’s online platform in the majority of EU countries. Local legislation stipulated that companies must update their products to include a USB-C port by December 28, otherwise they would be unable to sell them in the EU.
The devices have vanished from marketplaces in nations such as Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal. They still remain for sale in the UK, as it is no longer part of the European Union.
With the launch of the iPhone 15 in 2023, Apple established the USB-C port as standard across all iPhone variants. The company has also updated nearly all its accessories, including AirPods and Magic Mouse, to feature a USB-C port. However, the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE are still being offered with the Lightning connector.
This situation leaves EU customers without access to the more budget-friendly iPhones for the time being. The iPhone 14, which debuted in September 2022, maintained the iPhone 13 design while introducing a few hardware improvements, including Emergency SOS via satellite. Similarly, the iPhone SE 3 was launched in March 2022, retaining the classic iPhone 8 design complete with a Home button.
There are rumors that Apple will reveal a new, redesigned iPhone SE featuring a USB-C port early next year, which likely explains why the company hasn’t actively discontinued the current model in the EU. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 is anticipated to be phased out around September 2025 with the arrival of the iPhone 17 series.
