Not every iPhone release surpasses the sales figures of the previous model, and this seems to be the case for the iPhone 16 series. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook informed Susan Li that the latest models are experiencing higher sales compared to the iPhone 15 series during the same period last year. The somewhat surprising factor? Apple Intelligence.
Cook mentioned that “naturally, countries where we launched Apple Intelligence saw better year-over-year performance compared to those without it.” This subtly implies that the iPhone 16’s launch didn’t meet expectations in China, where Apple Intelligence has yet to be introduced.
Are the initial Apple Intelligence features genuinely translating into increased iPhone 16 sales?
Keep in mind that the iPhone 16 lineup initially launched without any Apple Intelligence features. You wouldn’t realize that given the bold marketing claim that “Apple Intelligence is here.”
Once Apple introduced the first round of Apple Intelligence features, which focused on enhancing writing and a redesigned Siri, many of the promised functionalities — like Genmoji, image creation, and ChatGPT integration — were absent.
Recently, Apple has made most of the year-one features of Apple Intelligence available, but there are still key Siri capabilities expected for iOS 18 that haven’t been included yet.
In the meantime, Cook stated that Apple Intelligence is set to expand to more countries in April, coinciding with the anticipated launch of iOS 18.4. This update is expected to introduce new Siri features that enable the virtual assistant to leverage context from your iPhone to fulfill requests.
Additionally, Cook touched on DeepSeek, the Chinese AI company that has made waves in industries associated with NVIDIA and OpenAI.
I believe it’s fantastic… that efficiency is a remarkable aspect, and innovation that enhances efficiency is commendable. We’ve always adhered to a hybrid investment model, as you’re aware, in the data center arena, where we manage our own data centers while also partnering with external providers. Therefore, we will likely maintain this strategy moving forward.
We hope Cook elaborates on these points during the next analysts’ call.
