Apple is making strides to significantly reduce the thickness of its devices, with the iPhone being the next in line.
The year 2024 marked a pivotal moment for this venture. The M4 iPad Pro was released in May, becoming Apple’s slimmest device to date, followed by the launch of the Apple Watch Series 10 in September, also showcasing a commendable reduction in thickness.
However, this year’s iPhone lineup didn’t undergo a similar transformation. That is set to change next year with at least one model.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature an impressively ultra-slim design. While it may not boast high-end specifications, it signifies a new direction in iPhone design.
In a recent Bloomberg report focusing on Apple’s in-house modem developments, Mark Gurman provided some intriguing details about the iPhone 17 Air.
This device will be the thinnest phone from Apple so far, showcasing the result of Apple’s substantial investments to replace Qualcomm… By utilizing its own modem, Apple is able to create a smartphone that’s roughly 2 millimeters slimmer than the iPhone 16 Pro.
For context, here are the current measurements of Apple’s flagship models:
- iPhone 16: 7.8mm
- iPhone 16 Plus: 7.8mm
- iPhone 16 Pro: 8.25mm
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: 8.25mm
Significant 25% Thickness Reduction
A decrease of 2mm compared to the 16 Pro would result in an approximate 25% reduction in overall thickness—slightly more than 25% when compared to the Pro models, and a bit less with the base models.
This aligns with earlier predictions indicating that the device might measure close to 6mm in thickness.
Currently, the slimmest iPhone is the iPhone 6 at 6.9mm thick. The 17 Air is anticipated to surpass that figure easily.
While many might not frequently use millimeters as a reference, the notion of a 25% reduction provides a more intuitive understanding of the changes involved.
Looking at my iPhone 16 Pro, shaving off 25% of the thickness would indeed create a significant impact. It would considerably reduce the space around the buttons of the 16 Pro.
