The upcoming iPhone 17 Air is set to grab attention with its remarkably slim profile. However, another standout feature may very well be its innovative display.
Historically, Apple’s screen size offerings have come in pairs
For many years, customers selecting a flagship iPhone have had a few primary screen size options.
- The standard iPhone and Pro models both featured 6.1-inch displays.
- The iPhone Pro Max and Plus models had 6.7-inch displays.
This paradigm shifted somewhat with the iPhone 16 lineup, as Apple increased the sizes of the Pro models to 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively.
Many former Pro Max users I’ve spoken with felt that the slightly larger iPhone 16 Pro provided enough space for them to move away from the larger model.
Personally, I found the increase in size of the iPhone 16 Pro to be more of a hindrance than a benefit. Instead of width, the added height made the phone feel bulkier than I preferred, lacking the Pro Max experience.
In contrast, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a display that fits perfectly between the current Pro and Pro Max sizes.
An innovative display size in the iPhone 17 series
Current insights suggest that Apple will maintain the iPhone 16 screen sizes for the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max.
However, a significant update is on the horizon with the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air.
The iPhone 17 Air is set to debut a 6.6-inch display, striking a balance between the Pro and Pro Max models.
While I usually lean towards smaller Pro models, I’m intrigued by the prospect of this additional size.
The sleek profile of the iPhone 17 Air should enhance the experience of a larger display for users like myself.
iPhone 17 Air may achieve the ideal size while incorporating Pro-level features
Years ago, I used a Max model and found much to appreciate in its expansive screen size. It certainly made accomplishing tasks on my iPhone more convenient without having to rely on an iPad or Mac.
Nevertheless, I ultimately found the Max too cumbersome for my liking. Yet, a much thinner iPhone paired with a 6.6-inch display might just be the ideal compromise.
The thickness of a device greatly affects how manageable its screen feels.
If it were possible to harness the utility of a Pro Max display while still enjoying the more compact feel of the smaller Pro, it would be a very convincing offer.
Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air’s display is rumored to include two significant features that have been exclusive to Pro models until now:
Without these features, transitioning from a Pro model to the 17 Air could prove challenging. However, with them, along with a unique screen size, my excitement to try out the new flagship model is truly heightened.
