Apple is set to unveil its inaugural foldable iPhone in the fall of 2026. Dubbed the iPhone ‘Fold’ by me, this device is anticipated to feature a book-like design. A recent leak concerning its internal display suggests that Apple is taking full advantage of the extra screen space, aligning with my expectations.
Inner display on iPhone Fold aims for an iPad-like experience
Reports indicate that the iPhone Fold will sport a large display with an aspect ratio resembling that of an iPad, described as “nearly 4:3.”
This specific aspect ratio is designed to synchronize the iPhone Fold experience with that of an iPad, fostering continuity between the two device families.
This is precisely the direction I envisioned for Apple.
As I’ve pointed out earlier, my ideal vision is for the iPhone Fold to serve as two devices in one:
- a sleek, contemporary, high-performance iPhone
- and an iPad mini when fully opened
Adopting an iPad-like display aspect ratio for the iPhone Fold, in pursuit of uniformity, is a logical choice that has me eagerly anticipating this product.
Anticipated screen sizes
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously disclosed that the foldable device will feature a 7.8-inch display when opened.
This screen size closely aligns with that of a contemporary iPad mini, being nearly identical to older iPad mini iterations that had bigger bezels and sported 7.9-inch displays.
Kuo also mentioned that the outer display of the iPhone Fold will measure 5.5 inches—slightly smaller than current iPhones but still relatively substantial compared to the original iPhone models.
If Apple can provide a convincing iPhone experience when the device is folded, and evoke an iPad feel when it’s open, I will find it much easier to rationalize the anticipated premium price tag.
